With support from Education Out Loud, Elimu Yetu Coalition (EYC) conducted a County-Based engagement in Makueni County, aimed at identifying persistent challenges in the education sector and gathering actionable, community-driven recommendations for improvement.
The forum brought together a diverse group of local education stakeholders, including county education officials, school administrators, civil society actors, community leaders, and parents. Through open dialogue and collaborative reflection, participants examined the key issues undermining access to quality education in the region.
Among the major challenges raised were inadequate school infrastructure, teacher shortages, limited access to digital learning tools, and socio-cultural barriers—particularly those that negatively impact school attendance and retention among girls and children from marginalized communities.
The engagement culminated in a strong set of locally informed recommendations designed to improve education access, equity, and outcomes in the county. These included:
- Increased investment in school infrastructure to accommodate growing student populations.
- Enhanced teacher recruitment, training, and deployment to address staffing gaps and improve instructional quality.
- Integration of ICT into teaching and learning, ensuring learners and teachers have access to digital tools and resources.
- Community involvement in education governance, encouraging stronger accountability and inclusive decision-making.
The Makueni engagement underscored the power of community participation in shaping education solutions that are both sustainable and contextually relevant. EYC remains committed to supporting county-led efforts that prioritize inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all.
