Elimu Yetu Coalition (EYC), convened county-based education dialogue forums in Kilifi, Garissa, Turkana, and Kajiado Counties aimed at strengthening inclusive education governance and addressing key challenges affecting access to quality education.
The forums brought together representatives from County Education Boards (CEBs), civil society organizations, teachers, government officials, education stakeholders, and community representatives to discuss emerging education issues and identify practical solutions for improving education outcomes across the counties.
The engagements focused on strengthening the role of County Education Boards in inclusive education governance, enhancing understanding of refugee education integration frameworks, reviewing progress made in education service delivery, identifying existing gaps, and promoting evidence-based advocacy for teacher deployment, recognition, and wellbeing.
Participants highlighted several challenges affecting education within the counties, including teacher shortages, inadequate school infrastructure, learner safety concerns, limited education financing, and barriers affecting vulnerable and refugee learners in accessing quality education.
The forums further emphasized the importance of collaboration between government institutions, civil society organizations, and local communities in ensuring inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all learners.
Some of the key recommendations from the county dialogues included:
- Strengthening the role of County Education Boards in providing advisory and oversight functions on refugee and inclusive education.
- Fast-tracking the registration of refugee camp schools as public/community schools under the Ministry of Education.
- Enhancing teacher recruitment, deployment, recognition, and psychosocial support, especially in marginalized and refugee-hosting areas.
- Increasing investment in school infrastructure and learner safety.
- Promoting stronger multi-stakeholder collaboration in education planning, monitoring, and accountability.
The county-based forums reaffirmed the need for sustained dialogue and collective action in addressing education challenges and advancing responsive education systems that leave no learner behind.
EYC remains committed to working with stakeholders across the country to champion equitable, inclusive, and quality education for every child in Kenya.
